The Department of Examinations has released the results of the 2024 GCE Advanced Level (A/L) examination, showcasing notable trends in student performance across Sri Lanka. According to the report, 67.32% of school candidates and 64.73% of all candidates qualified for university entrance, a slight improvement compared to previous years.
Key Highlights:
- Gender Performance: Female candidates outperformed their male counterparts, with 71.93% of female school candidates qualifying for university entrance compared to 60.24% of males. This trend was consistent across most subject streams and provinces.
- Subject Stream Analysis:
- Commerce led with the highest eligibility rate (73.98% for school candidates), followed by Bio Systems Technology (75.02%).
- Physical Science and Arts also showed strong performance, while Bio Science had the lowest eligibility rate (59.12%).
- Provincial Rankings:
- The Western Province topped the list with 70.18% eligibility among school candidates, followed by North Western (69.35%) and Northern (67.67%).
- North Central Province lagged behind with 62.03%.
- District Performance:
- Puttalam emerged as the highest-performing district (72.38%), while Polonnaruwa recorded the lowest eligibility rate (57.90%).
- Grade Distribution:
- Subjects like Home Economics and Drama & Theatre (Tamil) achieved near-perfect pass rates (98.73% and 98.73%, respectively).
- Mathematics and Combined Mathematics saw significant improvements, with pass rates exceeding 70%.
Challenges:
- Failure Rates: Approximately 9.11% of school candidates failed all subjects, with higher failure rates in Bio Science (15.89%).
- Gender Gap: Despite overall progress, male candidates continued to underperform, particularly in core science subjects.
